THE PROBLEM
A Simple Need, an Expensive Solution
It started with a straightforward question: why should managing an affiliate program cost $50-$100 a month?
Ace10x needed to manage partners, track referrals, calculate commissions, and keep visibility into affiliate performance. Existing platforms offered these capabilities, but with broader feature sets, integrations, and operational complexity than Ace10x needed.
The question wasn't which affiliate platform to buy. It was what Ace10x actually needed to build.
THE INVESTIGATION
Understanding What Makes Affiliate Software Expensive
Before recommending a solution, we analysed the affiliate management software market to understand how these systems work and where the complexity comes from. A complete platform may need to support:
- Accurate referral and conversion tracking
- Commission calculations and financial ledgers
- Partner onboarding and management
- Payout processing and reconciliation
- Fraud prevention and security controls
- Partner dashboards and reporting
- Third-party integrations, APIs, and SDKs
- Documentation and ongoing developer support
- Advanced commission structures and multi-level affiliate models
THE STRATEGY
Build the Essential 10%, Not the Entire System
The insight was simple: Ace10x didn't need to recreate an entire affiliate management ecosystem. It needed a focused, dependable implementation of the essential functions.
So we proposed building affiliate management directly into Ace10x's existing product. The goal was not to compromise on reliability or security, but to reduce unnecessary scope. The "10%" is our shorthand for that difference in scope, not a claim that the product contains exactly 10% of every competitor's features.
- Accurate tracking: record referrals and attribute activity reliably.
- Commission ledger: a structured record of commissions for transparent calculations.
- Partner management: manage affiliate relationships and the information needed to run the program.
- Payouts and reporting: support the payout workflow and give visibility into performance.
- Security and fraud prevention: safeguards that protect data and flag suspicious activity.
- Partner dashboard: a dedicated interface where partners can see their performance.
THE ENGINEERING
A Native Module, Not Another External Dependency
We built the affiliate management functionality using Django, PostgreSQL, and Redis, as a native module inside Ace10x's application instead of depending on a separate third-party platform and the integration layer that comes with it. The implementation centred on three principles:
- Native integration: affiliate management runs within Ace10x's application rather than relying on a separate provider for its core workflows.
- Focused engineering: effort went into tracking, commissions, partner workflows, payouts, security, and reporting instead of recreating a comprehensive platform.
- Simplicity without ignoring reliability: the simplest system that could meet the actual requirements reliably.
THE RESULTS
A System Built Around Ace10x
The custom affiliate management system is now live in production.
- 99% reported tracking accuracy, giving Ace10x a measurable indicator of its attribution performance.
- A more direct application experience, with no separate affiliate platform needed for core workflows.
- Greater control over how affiliate data is handled, subject to the application's own security and access controls.
- A more cost-conscious architecture that avoids a full third-party subscription. Actual net savings depend on development, hosting, maintenance, and operating costs.
- One focused workflow covering tracking, commissions, partners, payouts, reporting, and fraud prevention.
THE BIGGER LESSON
More Software Doesn't Always Mean More Value
Businesses often assume they must choose between an off-the-shelf product with more capabilities than they need and a large custom software project. There is another option: understand the actual workflow, identify the essential capabilities, and build a solution that fits.
The result is not a feature-for-feature replacement for every affiliate platform. It is a purpose-built solution for a specific business need. The goal isn't to build more software. It's to solve the right problem with the right amount of technology.
When we started building Ace10x, we needed an affiliate management system that could actually scale with the brand's ambitions, not just tick a box. The team understood this from day one. They asked the right questions, moved fast, and delivered something clean and functional. It's rare to find a tech partner who treats your new venture like their own.
